Sony Ends Production of Recordable Discs and Tapes
Sony announced it will stop producing recordable Blu-ray media, MiniDiscs, MD Data discs, and MiniDV cassettes as of next month, citing poor sales and evolving technology trends. These formats, which have been around for decades, are being phased out with no replacement models planned. While Blu-ray discs for movies will continue to be available from other brands like Verbatim, Sony’s exit from the recordable media market leaves limited options for MiniDisc enthusiasts. MiniDiscs, once favored for audio recording and valued by audiophiles for their tactile experience, have seen a niche resurgence but face potential scarcity. The move signals the decline of legacy formats like optical discs and tapes @Engadget
